Obi-wan Kenobi sliced down the two remaining Trade Federation droids.
The skinny, blaster-wielding robots belonged to the diplomats of the Trade Federation. And they were a race known as the Neminodians.
A vile, cowardly species, bent on money and power. And these diplomats had turned their sites on the defenseless planet of
Naboo. The Naboo were a peaceful people, who only knew of beauty and prosperity.
The small planet didn’t even have an army, only a small group of security volunteers. These helpless people were no
match for the droid armies of the Federation. Their leader was no warrior either. The Naboo had elected the very
young Queen Amidala to rule their planet. The girl had barely turned 14 when she was elected to her post. Obi-wan didn’t
understand how someone so young an influential could have gained such a high position in government. But then again, these
were no his people. Obi-Wan was a Jedi Knight in the Galactic Republic. Or more percisely,
he was a Padawan learner, training to become a Jedi Knight. He was here on Naboo, with his master Qui-Gon Jinn. They had been
dispatched from Coruscant, Obi-Wan's home wrold, by Supreme Chancellor Vallorum. Their mission had been simple: Negotiate with the Trade Federation,
and get them to dismantle the blockade on the planet, Naboo. Yet, things hadn’t gone so easy. As soon as he and Qui-gon
had arrived on the Federation’s ship, the sleazy creatures had tried to kill him and his master. Luckily they had been
able to get off the ship and onto Naboo. After meeting up with a funny looking Gungan named Jar Jar Binks, they
eventually found themselves at the Naboo Capital. However what they found in Theed only brought disappointment. The Federation
had dispatched their droid armies onto the planet, and had started an invasion. So Qui-gon and Obi-wan had to work fast to find the Queen and get word
to Coruscant of what was going on. “Get their guns!” The officer ordered his men, once Obi-wan
and Qui-gon had successfully destroyed all the droids. Qui-gon then lead Queen Amidala, her handmaidens, and all the guards
into an empty, outdoor walkway. Obi-wan followed the group inside, once he was sure no one had seen them. “We’re Ambassadors for the Supreme Chancellor.” Qui-gon
informed the group. “Your negotiations seem too have failed, Ambassador.” One
of the older gentleman replied. Obi-wan recognized him from the filed he had viewed during their flight to the planet. His
name was Sio Bibble, and he was the Governor of Naboo. “The Negotiations never took place.” Qui-gon replied, but
Obi-wan didn’t hear anything after that. While he had been looking over the group, Obi-wan noticed the young handmaiden
standing just behind the Queen. She seemed to be listening to the conversation very closely, far more so then the other handmaidens. “… This way.” The guard was saying, as he pointed
down the hallway. Obi-wan returned his focus to the mission, and followed the group down
the hall. When they got to the hanger door, they all gathered around it. “There are too many of them.” The officer said, indicating
the squadron of droids guarding a group of pilots inside the hanger. “It won’t be a problem.” Qui-gon replied. He then
turned his attention to the Queen. “Your Highness, under the circumstances, I suggest you come to Coruscant with us.” “Thank you, Ambassador,” Queen Amidala said in a cool,
diplomatic voice, “but my place is with my people.” “They will kill you if you stay.” Qui-gon warned. But once more Obi-wan’s mind drifted away from the conversation,
and he found himself staring at the young handmaiden. Her soft elegance made her seem more beautiful then the Queen herself.
She wore the same gown as the other handmaidens, but something made this one stand out. Obi-wan thought it might have been
the way she stood, but the longer he stared as her, the more he came to realize how beautiful she really was. “… Senator Palpatine needs your help.” Governor Bibble
urged the Queen to go along with the Jedi.” “Either course presents great danger,” Queen Amidala turned
to her handmaiden, “to us all.” “We are brave, your highness.” The handmaiden replied. And Obi-wan’s heart nearly flipped inside his chest. How beautiful
and how invigorating her voice had been. No other had ever touched him in such a way, it was exciting to get a taste of this
new feeling. Only he didn’t get to enjoy the feeling for long. The Queen had
finally decided to go along, and Obi-wan was forced to bring his mind back to the mission. They all walked into the hanger bay, and prepared themselves for a
fight. Padmé Naberrie scurried up the ramp, just behind Queen Amidala. Taking a quick glace behind
her, she saw the young Jedi slice down another Trade federation droid. Padmé was amazed at how quickly he moved. His attacks
seemed almost graceful. Looking back at the ship, she hurried to catch up with the other handmaidens. Once inside,
she followed Queen Amidala to the back thrown room. The Queen then took her seat on the podium, while her handmaidens silently
too their placed behind her. Padmé sighed and shifted her weight to the other
foot. There was a time when her name had been Padmé Naberrie. And there was a time when all she had to worry about was how she should wear her hair the next day. But those times had
ended years ago. She was now Queen Padmé Amidala, ruler of the Naboo. She had disguised herself as a common handmaiden, and
put her royal bodyguard, Sabé, in her place. And how she was on her way to Coruscant, the home planet of the “This is a paroles journey we are embarking on.” Sabé said in a calm voice.
She turned to Padmé and said, “danger is at every corner.” To anyone else, Sabé’s words seemed like a normal comment. To anyone else, the “Queen”
seemed to be merely stating her unease. But to Padmé is was a signal. Since Sabé had no real political training, and was merely
a handmaiden, she couldn’t possibly make decisions the Queen was forced to make. So in order for Padmé to stay under
cover, but still rule from afar, they had formed a special way of communicating. To anyone else, what they said seemed to
be normal conversation, when in reality, is was Padmé’s way of telling Sabé what to do. So when Sabé had said ‘danger is at every corner,’ what she was really saying
was that it was still too dangerous for Padmé to return to her position. She would have to stay under her handmaiden disguise. “Only time will tell.” Padmé replied, letting Sabé know she agreed. It was
far to risky to try and resume her position now. She would have to wait until they got to Coruscant before it would be safe. Suddenly, the ground under their feet shook fiercely, causing a few people in the room
to be thrown off balance. “What was that?” Sabé asked. Immediately one of the guards got on his comlink to find out. A moment later, there came
another rock, as though the ship had been hit by something. “We’re having trouble getting through the blockade.” The guard finally
answered. “Don’t worry, Your Highness. We have our best pilots flying this ship. We’ll get through.” Padmé took in an uneasy breath. This was the first time she had ever been in this sort
of danger. Why did being Queen have to be so complicated? Finally, the shaking stopped, and a quietness consumed the entire room. “How long will it take to get to Coruscant?” Sabé asked, braking the silence. The same guard as before got on his comlink to find out. After a few minutes of more silence,
the guard finally answered. “We’re having some problems with the ship, Your Highness. Captain Panaka, and Master
Qui-gon Jinn will be down in a moment to explain the situation.” “Very good, Lieutenant.” Sabé replied. It didn’t take the Jedi and Captain Panaka long to arrive. As soon as they did, they
immediately began filling the Queen in. Yet Padmé found it hard to pay attention. Standing in the far back of the room, just
next to the Jedi named Qui-gon, was the young Jedi that had caught her eye. He stood there, listening to the conversation
so discreetly, that if you hadn’t been looking for him, you would hardly notice he was there. Just watching him sent
her into a dream. He never spoke a word, but just his mere presence staggered
her. He was absolutely perfect. “Padmé?” Padmé jumped back to reality when she heard Sabé call her name. Immediately she walked
around to her front, to stand nest to the small, blue droid she heard was named R2-D2. “Clean this droid up as best you can.” Sabé ordered. She then gave a rare smile
as she said, “he disserves our gratitude.” Padmé didn’t reply, nor did she give any indication that she understood. Handmaidens
were supposed to know what to do right away, and never ask questions. “Continue, Captain.” Sabé said, turning back to Panaka. Padmé stepped aside, to let qui-gon pass her, so he could speak directly to the Queen.
While he did so, Padmé turned back to look at the other Jedi. She could tell by the way he carried himself that he was much
older then she was, but his face and height made him seem so young. She always thought that the life of a Jedi was so hard,
yet he made it look so easy. “Thank you, Master Jedi, Captain Panaka,” Sabé was saying, “you are dismissed.” Both Qui-gon and the young Jedi bowed to her, and then left. Padmé followed behind them
until they turned to head down to the cockpit, while she was forced to head to the back storage room to clean R2. |
